Choose Inlays or Onlays for an Effective Restorative Treatment
Dr. Damien Armstrong strives to preserve as much of your original tooth structure as possible and can evaluate decay and damage to determine if an inlay or onlay is sufficient to repair your tooth. At River City Dentistry in East Ridge, TN, we use CEREC® technology to provide same-day customized porcelain inlays and onlays for quick and convenient care. Inlays and onlays are recommended when a tooth is too damaged for a tooth-colored filling but not quite severe enough for a dental crown. Inlays and onlays can be designed from a variety of materials, such as composite resin, porcelain, and gold.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are designed to restore the chewing surfaces of teeth in the back of the mouth (molars) that have been damaged by decay, or a mild crack or fracture, and are unable to be repaired with a tooth-colored filling. This restorative treatment can also be used to replace old, silver amalgam fillings.
Both inlays and onlays are similar in their approach, but used to repair different areas of the tooth. An inlay will be selected if you have damage on the biting surface of your tooth between the cusps. For damage that affects one or more of the cusps and extends down the side of the tooth, an onlay can be used to strengthen your tooth. Onlays are a good alternative to a dental crown, however, if damage is too extensive, a dental crown may be a better option for added coverage and support.
Inlays and Onlays Procedure
During your examination, Dr. Armstrong will take a series of x-rays to determine the extent of damage to your tooth. Based on his findings, he will create a treatment plan to meet your unique needs and explain the procedure in detail. Treatment can be administered the same day as your examination or at a later time for your convenience. Using CEREC® technology, we can provide same-day restorations, making this treatment feasible in one office visit.
With CEREC® technology, we can create realistic looking restorations designed to last many years.
Before beginning treatment, he will administer a local anesthetic. Once you are comfortable, he will remove any unhealthy bacteria and gently reshape the tooth. Using digital technology, he will take impressions of your tooth and upload them to our CEREC® machine to fabricate your customized restoration.
Once the restoration is completed, Dr. Armstrong will place it over the tooth to ensure that it fits properly, make any necessary changes, and permanently bond it to the tooth with dental cement. Your custom inlay or onlay will fit seamlessly with your original tooth and prevent further decay from developing. With CEREC® technology, we can create realistic looking restorations designed to last many years.
Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
If properly cared for, a customized porcelain inlay or onlay can last up to 30 years. Due to its lifelike appearance, most people will be unaware that you have restored your tooth. With an inlay or onlay, you can strengthen and prolong the life of your tooth and prevent further damage. Compared to composite resin, porcelain provides:
- Long-lasting results
- Durable, stronger restoration
- Less enamel removal
- Most aesthetically pleasing results
