Preventive Dentistry Can Preserve Your Overall Health
Even with regular brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can form along your gum line and in between teeth, and only a professional dental cleaning can remove them completely. At our East Brainerd and Downtown Chattanooga, TN, practices, Dr. Damien F. Armstrong provides dental cleanings as part of effective preventive dentistry. He and our entire dental team also pay close attention during these regular dental checkups to discover and treat any dental problems in their earliest stages, before they become complex issues.
Why You Need Regular Check-ups
Bacteria and plaque naturally accumulate on teeth, and, if not removed, can harden into tartar. Even patients who brush and floss regularly will experience some buildup of plaque and tartar around the gums and in between teeth. A dental cleaning with our team can remove plaque, tartar, and stains that you are unable to reach at home.
However, if you do not maintain regular dental appointments, these substances can lead to decay and other serious health concerns. Plaque and tartar can cause cavities and other decay that will require treatment and restorative procedures to repair your tooth structure.
You can also develop gum disease, which can cause gum recession, tooth loss, and has been linked to serious issues such as stroke, heart attack, respiratory issues, and dementia. Preventative care through general dentistry can maintain your oral health, preventing long-term, far-reaching health concerns.
Regular Dental Appointments
During a routine visit to our office, you will typically be seen by both a dental hygienist and Dr. Armstrong. They will both examine your oral health and ensure that there are not any underlying issues that need to be taken care of. The hygienist will also clean your teeth, and may take 3-D scans every other visit as well.
What to Expect from a Professional Cleaning
Our hygienist will begin your cleaning by gently removing deposits of plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around your gum line. She will then polish your teeth with a specialized paste. This paste removes minor stains from your teeth, and smooths the surface of your enamel, which makes it difficult for bacteria to gather there.
Attending regular check-ups and cleanings every six months will help you keep your teeth healthy and clean, and will help prevent complex, costly procedures in the future.
Taking Highly Accurate Scans
We use 3-D computerized tomography (CT) scans to help discover hidden tooth decay, signs of gum disease, and misalignment, among other concerns. These scans show your whole tooth structure and help us provide accurate diagnoses for quicker, more effective treatment. Your CT scans will also provide our team with highly detailed images of your entire jaw structure, allowing us to see the roots of your teeth and the bone that supports them.
The Doctor’s Examination
During a regular exam, Dr. Armstrong will ensure you show no signs of cavities, oral cancer, or other health concerns. He may also check for proper occlusion, making sure your upper and lower teeth come together properly. After the exam, Dr. Armstrong will explain any dental issues he came across and recommend a course of treatment, if needed.
