Eliminate Discomfort and Restore Structural Integrity with Root Canal Therapy
Dr. Damien Armstrong is an experienced dental professional who can relieve your tooth pain and save the remaining structure of your tooth by providing effective root canal therapy at River City Dentistry in Chattanooga, TN. Root canal therapy is recommended when a tooth has been severely damaged from decay or trauma and is unable to be repaired with a tooth-colored filling or dental crown. This conservative endodontic treatment can help restore dental function, as well as prevent a tooth extraction and other costly restorative treatments, such as dental implants.
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Root canal therapy is an endodontic treatment that removes the nerves and infected tissue within the pulp chamber and replaces it with a solid material to seal the tooth and prevent further infection. Each tooth consists of several layers, including the enamel (outer structure), dentin, and pulp chamber. Within the pulp chamber is housed the soft tissue, nerves, and root canals.
At River City Dentistry, we will always try and save the tooth with conservative treatment before recommending an extraction.
When decay or damage occurs only to the enamel and dentin layer as a result of trauma, a fracture, or a deep cavity, the dentist can generally place a tooth-colored filling or apply a dental crown to repair damage. However, once the infection has penetrated the pulp chamber, the roots are irreversibly damaged and can only be repaired with root canal therapy or tooth extraction. At River City Dentistry, we will always try and save the tooth with conservative treatment before recommending an extraction.
Signs and Symptoms of Damaged Roots
It is important to schedule an appointment with Dr. Armstrong the moment you recognize any of the following symptoms, to help prevent further damage. Common signs and symptoms that can occur as a result of damaged tooth roots include:
- Bad breath or bad taste in your mouth around the damaged tooth
- Dental sensitivity when biting down or chewing
- Visible signs of infection (fever, abscessed tooth, gum inflammation)
What to Expect during Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy can generally be completed in one office visit, due to our same-day dental crown technology. Before beginning treatment, Dr. Armstrong will take x-rays to determine the extent of damage and the shape and size of your root canals to plan treatment specifically to your needs.
The basic steps to expect during your procedure include:
Anesthesia and Sedation: Before beginning the treatment, Dr. Armstrong will numb the tooth and surrounding tissue with a local anesthetic. If you struggle with dental sensitivity or dental anxiety, he offers sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation for optimal comfort.
Tissue Removal: Once the area is numb and you are comfortable, Dr. Armstrong will surround the tooth with a rubber dam to keep the area clean and free from saliva. He will then use special dental instruments to access the center of the tooth and remove the infected tissue and nerves. He will then flush the root canals to ensure they are thoroughly disinfected.
Tooth Preparation: Dr. Armstrong will then fill the tooth with a rubber-like material known as gutta-percha that will seal the tooth and help hold its natural shape.
Restoration Design and Placement: We will then take a digital impression of your tooth to create a same-day dental crown using CEREC® technology. Once the crown is completed, he will ensure that it fits properly and permanently bond it over your original tooth to restore its structural integrity.
